A special part of visiting Chumbe Island is the food experience. With the aim to spread the Zanzibari culinary offer to the world and showcasing the diversity of Swahili food through more sustainable food choices, we have compiled all the local dishes we serve on the island in our new cookbook.
KITAMU means tasty
With a daily changing menu, our overnight guests can enjoy a variety of local dishes for lunch, a sumptuous dinner and a delicious breakfast selection. Our day trip guests have the opportunity to get a taste of Zanzibari cuisine at our colourful Swahili lunch buffet.
Inspired by our guests who regularly ask for recipes, we’ve collected them all in a little book that makes the perfect souvenir for our guests and a great addition to anyone’s kitchen. KITAMU is Swahili. It means delicious, just like the diverse Swahili Zanzibari cuisine.
Explore the uniqueness of the Swahili Cuisine of Zanzibar
Zanzibar’s food culture is a blend of African, Arab and Indian influences. KITAMU is the culmination of these influences. With a selection of vegetable recipes as well as sustainable seafood, soups, salads, side dishes, drinks and of course our sweet desserts, KITAMU perfectly illustrates the unique culinary experience of Chumbe Island over 58 pages.
Sustainable Seafood and Education
Including our main pillars, education and conservation, was very important to us. In addition to the dishes regularly cooked and prepared by our kitchen team, you will find ten community recipes collected from members of the local community during a sustainable food event and recipe competition.
We have also included our sustainable seafood guide and international sustainable seafood guidelines to help our guests make more sustainable seafood choices.
#greenerzanzibar
With KITAMU we aim to directly support the Zanzibar Declaration on Sustainable Tourism, which has been launched in 2023. Learn more about the Zanzibar Declaration on Sustainable Tourism and be part of a sustainable movement in Zanzibar!
